What is the AF Lamp on a digital camera?

What exactly is the AF Lamp? And when do you use it? Is it for dark, poorly lit areas? Do you only use it with flash on? Please give me a complete explanation

Auto Focus. If light is too dim it will help your camera focus. I never had to manually set that, so it is probably automatic as needed. You should make sure that you do not put your fingers in front of it, or your camera may focus far away (infinity).
