Should we move house?
We have the opportunity to move to a bigger house in a better area, sounds perfect you might think, the problem is that it is about 8 houses away from my mother in law.
Now don't get me wrong, I get along with her very well and she thinks the world of the children, but I know if we are on her doorstep she will be 'popping' in every day, and this is where is will get tricky simply because we have totally different ideas about parenting.
My concerns are that she will unwittingly be undermining me in front of the children, and I guess I am a little afraid she will take over.
Another problem is that it is where my husband was born and bred, a little village on his old stamping ground, am I wrong to think it is going to be very tempting for him to revert back to single man days once back on familiar old territory, again not something that he would do intentionally, but I can just see it happening.
So should we move, or do I need my head testing???
my mother in law does not like me full stop,I'm a northern,and she is a southern,she thinks all northern people are lazy.As far as I'm concerned,there are good and bad,hard workers and lazy people where ever you go.you can not tell her that, so when we got our fist council house it was across the road from her.we had to take what we were offered,other wise it could be weeks before we were offered another one,anyway we moved in and all hell let lose, because i smack my son of 7 yrs, i only slapped his leg, because he had pulled his sisters hair so hard he pulled her of her feet.she got hold of my husband, on his way home from work and told him what i had done, she piled more on it.i went over to her house, we had murders and a lot of truth was send, on both parts. cutting down in the end she has turn out to be the best mother in law. my advise to you is,clear the air and tell her (nicely)how you will bring your kids up,and you would like it if she was on your side,and work together. it clears the air, and you will both know were you stand and she won't over step her mark. all the best. xxx

The Tested - $14.99 A single tragedy sends the lives of three people spinning hopelessly out of control as each struggles to seek meaning and redemption in a world turned upside-down. Julian Varone was an undercover cop who made a terrible mistake. As a result, Darraylynn Warren lay dead in the street. Meanwhile, as Darraylynn's despairing mother clings to the memory of her late son, his conflicted brother looks to gangs to provide the support that his fractured family cannot. At the same time, Julian struggles with feelings of intense guilt while preparing to return to work. As unlikely as it seems that these three lost souls could ever come together, the further they each fall the more apparent it becomes that they will need each other to successfully navigate the darkness that now defines their lives. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

fire alarm system walk test
Why do you test against values more extreme than the result in hypothesis testing with binomial distribution?
Say a question was:
"A coin was tossed 10 ten times, and 8 times it was a head. Test at the 5% significance level whether nor not this coin is biased towards heads.
So
Ho= p=0.5
H1= p>0.5
Why is it that now, you would test P(X>orequalto8) rather than just P(X=8) as surely the probabilities of it coming up 9 and 10 times are irrelevant?
Thanks
You are testing to see if the coin is fair or not. the hypothesis test is set up to help you come to a conclusion about whether or not the coin is fair. if you were looking to find out if the probability of a head was 80% then you'd set up the test as you noted in your second statement.
Consider the hypothesis as a trial against the null hypothesis. the data is evidence against the mean. you assume the mean is true and try to prove that it is not true. After finding the test statistic and p-value, if the p-value is less than or equal to the significance level of the test we reject the null and conclude the alternate hypothesis is true. If the p-value is greater than the significance level then we fail to reject the null hypothesis and conclude it is plausible. Note that we cannot conclude the null hypothesis is true, just that it is plausible.
If the question statement asks you to determine if there is a difference between the statistic and a value, then you have a two tail test, the null hypothesis, for example, would be μ = d vs the alternate hypothesis μ ≠ d
if the question ask to test for an inequality you make sure that your results will be worth while. for example. say you have a steel bar that will be used in a construction project. if the bar can support a load of 100,000 psi then you'll use the bar, if it cannot then you will not use the bar.
if the null was μ ≥ 100,000 vs the alternate μ < 100,000 then will will have a meaningless test. in this case if you reject the null hypothesis you will conclude that the alternate hypothesis is true and the mean load the bar can support is less than 100,000 psi and you will not be able to use the bar. However, if you fail to reject the null then you will conclude it is plausible the mean is greater than or equal to 100,000. You cannot ever conclude that the null is true. as a result you should not use the bar because you do not have proof that the mean strength is high enough.
if the null was μ ≤ 100,000 vs. the alternate μ > 100,000 and you reject the null then you conclude the alternate is true and the bar is strong enough; if you fail to reject it is plausible the bar is not strong enough, so you don't use it. in this case you have a meaningful result.
Any time you are defining the hypothesis test you need to consider whether or not the results will be meaningful.
