why does ac/heat pump unit ice up?

ac/heat pump ice's up when the it is running. i have 2 right next to each other and the larger of the 2 doesn't ice up. is there a problem with the 1 that does ice up.

Most common is a low refridgerant level, Dirty filter, or a dirty evaporator coil. It is possable that the contactor relay is stuck and the unit stays running even though the thermostat is cut off.

Can I replace a 2.5 ton Heat Pump Compressor with an A/C only unit?

I have a home with a 2.5 ton Heat Pump: split unit with compressor outside and air handler with heat strip inside
The compressore has failed and I do not want the expense of replacing everything AND have been told that it is both possible and not possible toreplace the outside compressor for the unit
The model of Heat Pump is a TRANE BWD730A100B1. I believe this is a 2.5 ton unit, not sure of the SEER rating.

Depending upon age you can just replace the compressor if one is still available.Yes you can use an a/c only condenser but you will have to rewire the t-stat and indoor unit to run the strip heat when there is a call for heat.This will increase your electric bill in the winter.The other factors are matching the evap with a new 13 seer condenser which usually requires a txv to be installed also depending upon brand and age of the system. Sometimes you can still find a 10 seer unit if you know the right people or contractor which will match you system again depending on age. If you do replace the compressor only make sure that the proper filter driers are installed, and that the system is cleaned up accordingly. Clean up of the system depends on what went wrong with the old compressor as far as a electrical failure or mechanical. Hope that helps.
