What light source should I use?

For a desk or bed lamp should I use LED light or a bulb? LED would be best but i dont know what kind would be bright enough.

Like a candle, or a street lamp.....is the air surrounding it glowing itself because it's being heated by the light, or is it just a perceptual trick our mind creates, or something else entirely?

Could be fog / mist or light refracting through water particles in the air.

If you wear glasses or contact lenses, it could be imperfections in the lens.
