Light Source Flash

How do I get good quality pictures without using the flash in low-lighting conditions?

I have a Cannon PowerShot S5IS digital camera. It's an awesome camera, and I usually use it in Macro and Super Macro mode.

Things are fine, till the lighting becomes low. I don't want to use the flash, always... is there something i can do? Maybe tweak a few settings? Or something else?

Please help me. Since I usually photograph insects, flowers and the like in their natural surroundings, artificial light sources are hard to find. How can I get the "what you see" kind of quality photograph using my cam? Please help me.

To help make sense of Wonder Much's response...
If your camera has the option, try to increase the aperture. Aperture essentially controls how much light your camera accepts. Aperture values are usually written in f/x notation, where x = some value. So, f/1.8 is a larger aperture than f/3.5. Fiddle around with the options and see if you can find a way to decrease that number (called f stop). Doing so manually will keep the shutter open longer... so have a steady hand.

If such advanced options are not available to you... your only option will be to manually increase the ISO value. I know your camera can do this. It's a rather simple function. The higher the ISO, the faster your camera accepts light. Because your camera is probably placing a limit on how slowly it allows its shutter to fire (to keep your picture from becoming excessively blurry), increasing the ISO value will allow more light to 'access' the image in that time period.
Be aware: higher ISO values produce grainier images. But if you have enough megapixels... it shouldn't pose an excessive issue. I guess it'll be the price to pay for sacrificing flash.

Something to consider: if you have the funds, think about purchasing a DSLR camera. It allows you change all the settings I mentioned and much more. Also, it allows you purchase various lenses to meet your needs and virtually any lens you purchase will be larger (and allow more light... i.e. no need for flash) than your powershot.

Finally... if you have any questions regarding how to access your camera's menu or options... consult your manual. I know ISO settings are there. I've used such cameras. As for aperture and shutter speeds... that's for you to discover.
