How many weeks can a home fetal heartbeat monitor work from?

My nan has given me the money to buy a heartbeat monitor so we can listen to baby's heartbeat at home and wanted to know if they can be used like the ones that the midwife/hospital uses or will i have to be a set amount of weeks along before one at home can pick it up??

Shop around and look for the best deal. Dopplers can be quite expensive. How well, or how early you can hear the heartbeat depends on the mhz of the doppler wand. 2mhz are usually cheaper, but are less likely to hear the heart beat prior to 12-14 weeks. 3 mhz are as early as 8-12 weeks. I use a 2.5mhz Sonolife that I won off of Ebay for one third the retail price.
