Should I get a Ruger Air Rifle?

Is this a good offer or will I find better? Its my first air rifle

It is refurbished Ruger Air Hawk Air Rifle for $65 + $11 shipping = $76 shipped. Works with .177 caliber pellets and includes a 4x32 scope with adjustible fiber-optic sight

Also it is considered small game hunting

$65 for a Ruger Air Hawk is not a bad deal, but chinese built springers are not exactly known for their durability.

*chronograph numbers, you can pretty much ignore any/all fps "claims" as they are all made either using light or ultra light weight pellets, which are unsuitable for hunting.

From a reliable source >they have the Air Hawk at 885fps with 8.2gr pellets(14.3ft-lbs) which makes it slightly more powerful than the Big Cat.

IMO, if you're just looking at an inexpensvie air rifle to get your feet wet, I would go with the Big Cat for the quality, but I did want you to have the MV/ME numbers for both.

IMO the least expensive air rifles that I consider to be "good" and one you can reasonable expect to last a lifetime are the Benjamin 392 & 397 . Or you can go a step up in power to the RWS 34(15ft-lb) , which is the rifle the Ruger Air Hawk attempts to copy

is 490 fps good enough for hunting?

i'm using a crosman 760 with fiber optic scope

A lot depends on what you want to hunt and the distance you want to hunt at. A .17 caliber, 8 grain pellet at 490 fps yields 4.3 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. That's not enough to hunt rabbit at any distance, however at extremely close [emphasis on the extremely close] range it is enough to hunt squirrels, pigeon, starling, mice, English sparrows, and other animals in that size range. Those species take 2-3 ft-lbs of energy which your gun could deliver.(1)

A .17 caliber, 8 grain pellet with a ballistic coefficient of .02 will retain 3 ft-lbs of energy out to 25 yards (at least according to the calculator I'm using).(2) That said I think shooting those animals at 25 yards with a 4 ft-lb airgun is not a good idea. I'd personally limit the range to no more than 10 yards since you'd need perfect [emphasis on the perfect] shot placement to humanely kill animals since you're basically using the absolute minimum power level needed. Anything less than perfect shot placement would simply wound the game animal.

Unless there is a legal reason you can't own a more powerful airgun (such as you live in Canada and don't want to go through the hassle of registering your airgun as a firearm), I'd encourage you to get a more powerful airgun such as the 9 ft-lb Crosman 2100, or 11 ft-lb Daisy 22SG since it will not only increase your range but give you a safety margin in case you make a less than perfect shot and let you hunt larger animals like rabbit.
