Forceps Rotating
PLease predict what will happen in this part(Part A) with a justification?
1. Stir a catalase solution (liver extract).Using forceps, dip four filter disks (one at a time) in the catalase solution.Transfer the dampened disks to one interior sidewall of the reaction vessel. Position disks in the upper half of the reaction vessel .Stir catalase solution before you dip each disk.
2.Stand reaction vessel upright. Add 10 ml of 3% H2O2 solution. Insert stopper (with medicine dropper) in reaction vessel.
3.Keeping the side with the disks upward, place reaction vessel on its side in the pan of water.
4.Prepare to start timing the reaction. This step involves rotating the reaction vessel 180 degrees so disks will be covered by the H2O2 solution. Rotate vessel vessel now. Notice the time. This is time 0.
5.Measure oxygen levels in graduated cylinder at 30 second intervals for a 5 minute period (from the time the reaction vessel is turned on its side).
6.Remove disks.Thoroughly rinse/dry your reaction vessel.
7.Repeat for:
a. 3 disks
b.2 disks
c.1disk
The liver extract coating the filter discs contain enzymes that breakdown the hydrogen peroxide solution into hydrogen and oxygen gas. The more coated discs you use, the faster and more production of gas.
