In the UK what is the longest distance a good radio ham set will work ?

In the uk can anyone recommend a good radio ham se that will pick up at the longest distance ?

"Ham" radios are two way devices. In saying "pick up" I gather you're interested in listening to international broadcasts? These are usually called "short wave" or "world band" receivers.

Sony has a variety of decent SW portables - the current incarnation of the SW7600 is good. The Grundig/Eton E5 has been getting some great reviews and is not very expensive.

I think your best bet is to start with a good book on the subject. In the US we have "Passport to World Band Radio". It's a great introduction to the subject.

There is a UK company I've been dealing with some time called "Javiation." They're on the web at javiation.co.uk. Everything they sell is top grade in its category and they can give you good advice.

How would you set up a HAM radio in an appartment?

I live in a bottome floor appartment and I am wondering if anyone can help me with antenae ideas for an appartment?
I am not very knoledgeable of antenaes but I will look it up if you jusgest one. How would you or how have you set up an HAM radio in an appartment? What are some good antenae choices that dont take up much room?
