Becoming a medical specialist in the UK?
*I am planning to go to Cambridge Medical school (Girton College) in the UK. After graduation, I wish to gain a specialist qualification in sports medicine and musculo-skeletal therapy. In the UK, how would this be possible? I cant find any medical specialist schooling facilities. Where would I go for each of the medical specialist groups? (eg opthamology, nephrology, cardiology)
*I am also deciding whether to become an orthopedic surgeon instead. In the US, i know this involves 5 years of training, 4 of which are spent as a registrar. How does the system of becoming an orthopedic surgeon work in England? And how many years, on average, would you be required to work as a registrar to become any type of surgeon?
Thanks very much!
Once you have obtained your 1st degree and provisional registration you then do a year as a JHO, 6 months medicine and 6 months surgery where you learn to look after patients and gain full registration. You apply for specialist training posts which in your case would be surgery. Make sure that the training includes a fair amount of orthopaedics and casualty, all of the rotas include general surgery but the specialisms vary. You will then begin the Fellowship examinations for the Royal College of Surgeons. You then apply for Registrar training which will be more specialised in orthopaedics but may include related topics like neurosurgery or vascular surgery depending on the rota. You will then finish the Fellowship examinations and at the end of this you will be able to apply for consultancies.
If you want to specialise in sports medicine you should apply for posts in hospitals which have an interest in sports medicine and where you might have the chance to work with surgeons with an interest in this topic. Read the literature as you reach the end of your 1st degree/JHO year and take note of where the interesting authors are working.
Good luck - I think it is currently 7-10 years post graduate training to become a consultant.

MAKOplasty® Animation - Patient Education
Hi i will be a junior next year and i would like to know what kind of education i need to become a orthopedic.?
Do i also need to learn other part of the body besides the skeletal system?
I will assume you are a junior in high-school. To get into a good medical school in the USA, you will likely need to pass the MCAT or another standardized test. So, go to the library or bookstore and get a copy of any study guide for this test or another medical school admissions test, to see what to study to get admitted. You will certainly find the following information helpful:
*The human skeletal system
*The locations and names of the major muscles in the human body (after you study them, learn the minor ones).
*Developmental; levels at which children learn certain tasks associated with coordination that is related to the particular orthopedic field you are interested in pursuing.
*Other topics in human biology (see the test guide for lists of them).
Other basic prerequisites that you will need include basic mathematics (likely through calculus), basic English (enough to pass the general education requirements of a typical college), and other general education requirements. These kinds of requirements vary a bit from one school to the next, but certainly should not deter you from pursuing your goal. If one of the basic subject areas is hard for you, then you may want to look for a college which has peer tutoring as part of its academic support system: today, many colleges have this.
If you have been identified as qualifying for accommodations due to learning disabilities, these can carry over into college, if your diagnosis is current, and there is a way to articulate exactly what kinds of accommodations you need. For example, a person who is diagnosed with dyscalculia (like mathematical dyslexia in terms of reading numbers but not impairing ability to think logically about mathematics), then you would likely be permitted to use a calculator on all assignments, So, when you see requirements and think that maybe, one or more are too difficult for you, try planning what interventions you can use to make your dream possible.
