Fentanyl had no effect on me.?

I was given total over 15 min 250 of Fentanyl to sedate me when i had an endoscope test done but it didn't effect me in the slightest they could have given me a saline flush that's how ineffective it was. what would cause this? i was awake fully during the test I hated it. I have to have the test done again soon. I asked my dr he said he didn't know and asked if i used Fentanyl recreationaly i told him the truth no i don't do any drugs i don't even smoke or drink. maybe 1 glass on new years that i never even finish.

250 mcg is a large dose (50-100 mcg is common in a person who is opioid-naïve) but it is hardly that rare or odd. Even people without opioid-tolerance (due to medical or illicit use) can have a naturally high tolerance and require a large dose. Also fentanyl and other opioids often are not sedating (opioids are NOT technically sedatives or tranquilizers or hypnotics) for many people. Part of the reason you may have hated the test could also be the fact that the fentanyl may have been causing significant side effects. Actually when people fall asleep on opioids it is typically because of taking a massive dose or due to the analgesia (since pain can cause insomnia, anxiety, agitation) allowing a person to sleep.

If you have to do it again talk to the doctor before and mention the fact that fentanyl was not an effective medication for you. A real sedative like Versed (midazolam) or Valium (diazepam) is certainly something to talk about using. Versed, a rapid acting benzodiazepine is most commonly used often combined with an opioid like fentanyl or Demerol (meperidine). Demerol is a much different opioid so your reaction could certainty be different. Benzodiazepines, which are sedatives, do not really provide analgesia thus a combination is highly effective and synergistic and excellent to provide twilight sedation (the level of sedation normally used for endoscopic procedures).

You can certainly talk with your doctor about other medication or doses that may be best for you but a combination of drugs is likely a good idea.

What is Lithotripsy ?

Lithotripsy is a non-invasive procedure that uses shock waves (thus the term Shock Wave Lithotripsy) to break up stones that form in the kidney, ureter and urinary bladder. What does the procedure of Lithotripsy involve ?

You will be instructed not to eat or drink anything at least 12 hours before the Lithotripsy procedure. Wear comfortable clothing so that you can change easily into a surgical gown for the surgery. The entire Lithotripsy procedure may take approximately one hour. You will receive local anesthesia with sedation to minimize pain and discomfort however, at the same time you will be required to stay still during the Lithotripsy procedure.....

 

Recovery

You will probably have a lot of blood in the urine after the Lithotripsy procedure. This is normal and should clear after several days or so. Lots of fluids should be taken to encourage the flushing of any gravel (forced diuresis) remaining in the urinary system. For the next couple of days after Lithotripsy, you will be instructed to collect your 24 hour urine and send it to the laboratory for analysis of the debris.....
