Does an endoscope have to be passed down the left nasal meatus in a horse?

Endoscope is inserted through the left nasal meatus until pharynx is reached. In the pharynx wall the openings to the left and right guttural pouches are diagonal caudoventral slits. The endoscope can be inserted though these slits and the guttural pouch (an invagination of the eustacian tube, it is divides in to medial and lateral parts by the stylohyoid bone of the hyoid appreatus) examined and subsequently flushed.

Can you use the right? Is there a specific reason that the left is used or does it not matter?

Nope, either side is fine. In fact, it is easier to access the two guttural pouches from the different nostrils (in most it is easier from the same side but in some the opposite is better).

Ironically because I am right-handed I always tend to pass the scope up the right nostril first as I find it easier to hold the right nostril open with my left thumb than the left nostril - that way I can place the rest of my left hand between the two nostrils to get some stability for my hand and some leverage for my thumb. I then advance the scope with my right hand. My nurse does the same. This is if you are standing in front - if you are standing next to the head (facing the same way as the horse) then if you are right-handed it is easier to wrap your right arm around the head, hold the right nostril open with your right hand and advance the scope with the left hand. This is easiest way to scope if the owner is being inept at holding and you have no nurse!
