Survival Rate Esophageal Cancer with Stents

A wide majority of esophageal cancer patients might not be the best candidates for surgery during or after diagnosis as it might be due to the advanced stage of cancer or due to the presence of distinct comorbidities.

In order to improve food swallowing and to get relief from dysphagia metal stents that can expand all by themselves are implanted.  Now application of endoscopic laser too is used instead of self expanding metal stents.  Even though it is easy and safe to keep expandable stents inside the esophagus of the patients they too can result in producing certain complications.  Distal migration is the main problem caused by metal stents which has the incidence rate of ten to thirty percent in patients.  It has been found that it is common by fifty percent when endoprostheses (covered) are used in treating distal lesions of the esophagus which also involves the gastroesophageal junction.  In case of complete migration of the stents inside the stomach, it needs to be removed through small gastrotomy or endoscopy.  But if the stent had partially migrated then a second stent (uncovered) can be inserted to prevent the previous one from moving further.  But replacing the partially or completely displaced stent is said to be a safe and usual technique that can offer maximum results.

Another problem faced with esophageal cancer stents is caused due to the ingrowth of tumor via the uncovered stent mesh.  This can happen in seventeen to thirty six percent of persons or covered overgrowth in nearly nine percent of cases.  The problem of recurrent dysphagia can be overcome by placing an extra stent.
