Endoscopy Repair
can a hiatus hernia be life threatening and can it repair itself?
i read on wikipedia that most of the time these type of hernias do not require surgery. It is my mom that has it, she found it out yesterday from an endoscopy. 3 months ago she had surgery for a perforated bowel and I dont think she can handle another operation right now and am just wondering if its needed or not thanks
Your mom shouldn't need another surgery anytime soon. Surgery is not the permanent solution, it can always appear again. Which after a while would weaken the diaphram and cause stomach discomfort and possibly digestive problems. Your mom should avoid fatty food and things that cause reflux, which is usually the cause of this type of hernia. She should not eat 2 to 3 hours before bed and she should also sleep with her head elevated(over 8 inches) like on one of those wedges to prevent the hernia from sliding. Avoid wearing tight clothing that squeezes the stomach, that will only force the hernia to move further into the diaphram. She could try an exercise that helps to stomach to shift back downwards to its proper position. Tell her to hold on to a door frame while standing and lightly lift her heels off the floor a couple of inches then drop back down.
