upper & lower endoscopy?

hi, im 17, and i am getting an upper and lower endoscope on monday morning, i am suppose to take 5 / 5mg tablets at 12 noon. how long does it take for that to kick in ?

I think you're confused on several points here. First, you forgot to mention what medication you're supposed to take 5-5mgm tablets of. Then you mention you're getting both an upper and lower endoscopy done on Monday morning. There are 2 things here. First why would you take these 5-5mgm. tablets Monday at noon when the procedure is in the morning? Secondly, there s no lower endoscopy. The upper endoscopy covers the area's from your mouth down and including your stomach and opening to the upper small intestine. Then a procedure called a colonoscopy covers from the rectum through the intestines and where the upper leaves off. You're GI doctor's office must have gone over these tests along with whatever parent is going to be with you. You are always notified for any age that someone must be with you as you will not be allowed to leave the out patient surgical center without a driver. For both of these procedure's you always are NPO or nothing by mouth after midnight too. At one point a laxative type drink or maybe these mysterious pills are supposed to start cleaning your bowels out so that the colonoscope can see the intestine without obstruction. Either way, you'll expect to be completely cleaned out from the stomach through the intestines for this procedure to be successful. Please have these points cleared up before you go into the procedure so that you don't waste anyone's time. If there was confusion then it's okay to reschedule if you need to. A GI doctor schedules several of these to be done in one morning or day so that they are only doing it for their patients a certain day of the week and can be free to be in the office or hospital for other things the rest of the time. How does a doctor "steer" an endoscope?

When you go in for a gastric endoscopy or a colonoscopy, the scope obviously doesn't take a straight path; it has to go around curves and twists to follow the intestine (in a colonoscopy) or make its way through the stomach (upper endoscopy). How does the doctor guide the scope through the curves?

There are a couple of little knobs on the handle. You can even turn it around on itself, so in an EGD (upper endoscopy) you can pass the scope into the stomach and turn the end around to look back "up" at the esophagogastric junction.
