Laparoscopy or Keyhole Surgery

Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that is becoming popular right across the world. It consists of a video camera connected to a fibre optic cable system that is inserted into the abdominal cavity. The incision needed for the insertion of this cable is just 5mm to 10 mm and this cable is called the laparoscope and thus the procedure is called laparoscopy. The size of the incision required for this is much smaller than the cut made during conventional surgery and thus it is also called keyhole surgery. This procedure is generally used in the case of abdominal surgery while keyhole surgery performed on the thoracic or chest cavity is called thoracoscopic surgery.

The benefits of laparoscopy or keyhole surgery over conventional surgical procedures are numerous and varied. These include –

• Less operative trauma and therefore reduced incidence of complications
• Less pain for the patient and minor physical scarring
• Shorter hospital stay and quicker recovery
• Return to work within a shorter period of time
