Will a multi-volt adaptor work for my laptop?

For some strange reason, the cord that I usually use for my laptop isn't working and no power is going to my laptop
However, it does work when I use an old multi-volt adaptor I found but because it only goes up to 12V (and I think my laptop is 20V) it goes on for about a second and then switches off.
Would a MVA with the right voltage work? and if so, does anyone know where i could get one?

I haven't seen MVAs that will handle laptop adapter level power requirements (typically 19V @ 4A), although I have heard of one specifically for laptops.

It's usually cheaper (but still expensive) to buy a new laptop power adapter to replace your bad one.

First make sure that the wall cord hasn't wiggled loose from the power brick. It can look connected, but not be fully plugged in, which isn't obvious.
