How do you tell if you have a Male or Female Red Cap Oranda?
Have a red cap oranda, only one and I was wonder how to tell if the little thing is male or female?
well you do have to wait til breeding time
but there are other ways just they might not be as procise
you can look at how big it is and and how wide wider and bigger female and slender and thin male
but you might mistaken a female for a obese male
and you can always look at where it poo comes from and if the area is kinda sticking out its a female and if you dont notice anything its a male but you might need a magnifying glass if your oranda are small

Red Cap Oranda is losing scales, what can I do?
Recently I noticed that my red cap was no longer roaming the fish tank and had taken to hiding from the other fish in my 30 gallon fish tank. And today, as I was feeding them, the redcap came out of it's hiding and I noticed that it had lost a large amount of scales, half of the body no longer has scales. Furthermore I noticed that the redcap looks like it has been eaten.
I only have a veil tale and four smaller fish which resemble guppies, I forget their name.
Does your fish look bloated? Are his scales sticking out? If not it isn't dropsy. Goldfish will loose scales during the breeding season and rarely if ever fro dropsy. There is a parasite which can lead to the loss of many scales, myxosporidean parasite (Henneguya). This is much tougher customer to rid your tank of. Increased aeration (drop your water level 1 inch and allow the filter to pour into the tank) in combination with merbromin baths is the only known proven method for treatment. Your fish will have to be isolated since this is a bath basically of Mercurochrome (?)
The only other way to rid your tank is to do numerous water changes. Can you see any type of parasite on your fish? Anything else that is odd?
