Center Video Processor

I want to buy or build a Macintosh computer. I want a media center to edit video and digital photography.?
I also enjoy flight simulator and general web stuff. So whats the least expensive way to go? Buy it or build it? Either way give me a complete list of the model or platform including processor, memory, cards, drives, RAM, etc.I had an old Mac Plus in the eighties and I loved it and I am so done with PC's. Give me the best answer and you get 10....thanks!
Buy it. If you are a gamer and a photo buff, you will appreciate the new iMacs specially the new 27" model. Go to http://www.apple.com/imac/ and check out the specs and pricing.
For gaming, you will appreciate the nice graphics card built into their systems. Simply use Boot Camp to create a Windows partition and install your favorite Windows version in it. At boot time, you will be presented 2 icons, an Apple or Windows. Select Windows and make sure that you install all the hardware drivers that comes on the 2nd DVD with your new Apple product. After that, simply install your favorite game and you are off!
If you like editing and retouching digital photos, you will appreciate the wide screen to do editing. I would recommend that you get more memory as well, usually double what is default. If the system you select has 2G, go for 4G, it if has 4, go for 8 if you can afford it. 4G should be sufficient with use on any video or photography software but as the video and photo software recommends more RAM is always better.
I know it is a little more expensive than a high end PC but the quality of a Mac for game play and video/photo editing is far better and well worth the price you pay. One extra note, if you are a student or attending school or in the education field, you can get an extra discount by presenting your credentials. Take advantage of that.
Good luck and I hope this helps.

Key Digital's KD-VPHD3 Video Processor
What are the best upgrades I need for my new Media Center PC to keep the CPU from spiking?
I have a Compaq Media Center PC with an Athlon 64 3500+ processor, 1 GB memory, 256MB shared video memory, and a 200GB hard drive. I installed an after market PVR-500 TV Tuner.
My CPU usage keeps spiking. Would either a memory upgrade, a new video card with dedicated memory, or both, help this problem? I am trying to do other tasks while it is recording television shows, but the CPU spiking is prohibiting that, making things very slow, and causing problems with the connection to the XBOX.
You need to see how many programs are running on your taskbar. If you have a lot, you need to bump some off. Your computer should not be spiking much with 1 gigabyte of RAM--it kind of suprises me. Start --> Run... --> "msconfig" without the quotes will bring up your startup list. You may either Disable all the boot-up programs, ones that load whenever you computer boots up, which really slows it down, or you can go through and hand pick a few. Windows will keep the ones that it needs to run.
You could also defragment your hard drive, such a large hard drive needs to be kept up rountinely. Start --> Accessories --> Systems Tools --> Disk Defragmenter.
Spyware often slows down a computer as well, so you may want to get Ad-Aware (http://lavasoft.com/) and run a few scans to get all that nasty stuff off of your computer. Your anti-virus's automatic updater or Windows's automatic updater may be slowing down your computer at a certain that they are set to check. You can change the anti-virus's by probably going into the Options of the program. You may just turn Windows Update off, even though it takes hardly anything at all--so I don't recommend it. And also, make sure you do Windows Updates regularly, they will speed up a computer sometimes.
If you still experience spikes, then you probably need some more virtual memory. Right-click "My Computer" --> Properties --> Advanced tab. Under the performance section you will see a virtual memory/paging button. Click it.
You will have to set it custom. Since, it is healthy for your computer to have 2.5 or 3 times the amount of RAM in paging/virtual memory, you need 2.5/3 GB of paging/virtual memory. Set the minimum and maximum to the same thing.
If you STILL have spiking issues, contact me at: intervain@hotmail.com. I'll give you some tweaking secrets.
