Drill Hand Piece

Are there any tricks on drilling straight with a power hand drill when drilling into thick pieces of wood?

I need to drill into a piece of wood (70mm thick) and want to make sure I drill straight (at 90 degrees to the surface). I only have access to a power hand drill, do not have access to a drill press. Are there any ways to make sure I drill through it straight?

can you get a powerdrill holder? it works the same as a drill press but you supply the drill and merely clamp the drill in place

Tort Law assignment, loss of finger compensation?

I have an assignment in my grade 10 civics class, and we were given a case. The case is about a six year old boy who was playing with his friend near a wall at his school. The day before, Bell came and drilled a hole in it for high speed internet. The wall is ten years old, but the contractors simply stacked the cut stone rather than using concrete or mortar. A piece of cut stone fell on the little boy's hand, crushing the three middle fingers of his right hand. The had to be amputated at the first joint. He was right handed.

How much money will his family receive as compensation for each finger?

Who should be sued in the end, and why? (ie. the school, builders, Bell) also in more detail- if the school was responsible, then who in the school would have made the decision to build that wall?

Wow, that's a good one.

1. If it were my son, I would sue Bell for their negligence in not putting up boundaries from keeping kids and others away from the wall while there was "active" construction going on at the wall.

The construction of the wall itself was probably necessary for the safety of the children at the school, and the wall was fine and in good repair for the ten years of its existence, so the wall itself should be a non-issue.

2. The school should also be liable because they had custody of the boy when the accident occurred, and their negligence in watching the boy contributed to the accident. If the boy were 15 it would be one thing, but the boy was six, and not old enough to appreciate the damage and harm that could have been done to him; therefore, the adults in charge of his care are definitely liable.

3. A lot of states have caps on non-economic damages, which means that for pain and suffering, in California, he is entitled to no more than $250,000. His parents should also receive $250k for their pain and suffering, because they will have to care for their handicapped and disfigured son until he's 18, and any injury to your child, permanent or otherwise, is pain and suffering, period. Because of caps, the family will not get compensation for each finger, but a flat sum of money. (This is true in a lot of states, but not all of them. For instance, Wisconsin ruled that caps on non-economic damages was un-Constitutional.

4. As for the loss of his fingers? How much do you pay someone for their fingers? There's no real way to calculate the loss of a digit or limb. It's not like you can get prostheses for fingers lost at the first joint, at least at this point, so this one is a little more tough.

The school is going to argue that they were not aware of the conditions of the wall left by Bell, and unless Bell could produce a signature that the school signed explaining the condition of the wall, it would be hard to prove that they were aware. This does not erase the school's liability, but it would probably diminish it a great deal.

Bell would ultimately be responsible for his medical expenses for the rest of his life, so any care and aftercare would have to be paid (this is assuming the boy wins his lawsuit, of course) by Bell.

In reality, the boy would still be able to open doors and write with pen, type on a computer, dress himself, etc. He would need physical and occupational therapy to help him learn how to do this. He might need some counseling to cope with the loss of his fingertips, but in the end, his lasting harm is not nearly as harmful to him as someone who loses an arm or a leg, because while his injury is devastating, he still has enough of his fingers to be able to function somewhat normally.

I would figure, given all the things I would say, that the boy's family would be very lucky to win a half million dollars in economic damages, and $250k (assuming California) for non-economic damages, or "loss of fingers."
