Halogen Lamp Cold

How effective are LED Halogen replacement lamps? Also, how good are the coloured versions?

I have over 60 230v 50W halogen lamps spread throughout my house and a huge electric bill to go with it. So, I have been looking at ways I can economise a little by reducing the power.

I have seen LED lamps that last 25 time longer and use about 1/20th of then power of a conventional 50W halogen lamp.

How good are these alternatives? Is it a cold light? Do they not offer much brightness?

Also, as I use lighting to create effects in the house, I was thinking about installing just a couple of the colour changing GU10 LED lights within each circuit of 8 to give effect. How good are these?

I would welcome feedback from anybody that has used these before.

You can see them in action at any Home Depot. Go to their Lighting/Fixtures department. I use the 60w alternative lights in my home and do not need to squint when I read. They work great, are cool to the touch, and do not use much electricity.

How can I save money on our energy bill?

My energy bill for the last two months was way higher than I'd expected. Me and my roommate are really good about turning off lights, closing laptops when they're not in use, and when we're both gone on vacation we turn down the heat and even unplug the TV and other things. Why is my bill still so high??
We have a two bedroom apartment, it's pretty big, and we have a lot of floor to ceiling windows. I keep the curtains shut when it's cold or night time so heat doesn't escape too much. We also have a washer and dryer that we use probably 10 times a month, maybe more. Our heat is electric.

Do water heaters use much energy? (Ours is very small, if we both shower in the morning one of us has a cold shower). The lamp in the living room is one of those 5 60Watt bulb lamps. Do halogen lamps use less or more energy?

How can I save money on our energy bill?
Keep in mind we are poor college students, low energy light bulbs are kind of expensive. (is it worth it?)

this sounds way to simple and easy, but give it a shot. put on a sweatshirt and heavy socks. sounds dumb to say but tons of college kids are used to their parents paying the bills so they walk around barefoot in shorts and a t-shirt. then they get cold and turn up the heat. next time, turn the heat down to no higher than 68 degrees. if you are still cold, add a long sleeve tshirt and a pair of slippers to your feet.

do this and i am sure that your bill next month will be lower. one final tip, next birthday or christmas, ask for an electric blanket. then you can turn the heat down in your room yet feel warmer than you did before.
