Automatic Light Source

can i charge a battery to power a light if the power gos out?

ok.
i have a light that has a 12volt battery and a power source to charge that battery. but when the power source has no power to charge the battery with, it kills the battery faster.
besides unplugging the battery from the charger ,lazy... i know , i want a automatic switch that will open the connection between the charger and battery and then close when the charger has power again.
i have some soldering experience, and plenty of parts to make a electronic switch, i just need instructions on how to.

Easy. You need a single pole relay that closes contacts when energized. Wire the coil so it is powered from the wall in some manner. When closed, the contacts connect the charger to the battery, when open disconnects the charger. You could also use "steering" diodes. Think of a T connection. In the top left is a diode which lets current flow IN from the charging circuit, the bottom of the T goes to the battery, the right side goes to the load. Check the ratings on the diode. The incoming diode has to handle the maximum current to charge the battery AND light the lamp. These will be labeled as "power rectifiers" and normally are used to make DC from AC current. In this case, the diode acts simply as a check valve for current. Power from the battery can only go out to the lamp, not backflow into the charging side. The disadvantage to the diode is that there IS a 0.5 volt drop across the diode. The relay switching over is a zero loss device. This is called a dropout relay, in that when the power drops out, the relay does as well to disconnect the charger. You could make a simple automatic light by using a relay with contacts which close when it LOSES power and then connects a light to a battery in place of a light switch. Power goes off, light goes on. Simple... Navy ships have these kinds of battery powered automatic lights ALL throughout the ship, in every occupied space. If the power goes off for any reason, the crew can still see enough to do what needs to be done.
