Water in the surroundings of a system cools. What happens to the system?

Just a little bit confused about system/surroundings. So, thinking of a calorimeter, water in the surroundings of a system cools. (As a side note, this would mean a negative deltaH value, correct?)

If this water in the surroundings were to cool, is the reaction in the system endo- or exothermic? Why? Like, what's going on here? Just a little confused

It's an endothermic reaction if it absorbs heat from its surroundings. The surrounding heat is absorbed to power the reaction. In most endothermic reactions, we think of a process that must be exposed to a flame or heated significantly to drive the reaction forward. Considering that all reactions require an over-all increase in entropy either within the system or from without, it seems counter-intuitive that heat is moving into the system from its surroundings and not the other way around. The Second Law of Thermodynamics looks like it's being challenged, but it's not. Endothermic reactions can take place in ambient temperature if the reaction process results in increased entropy of the chemicals, if not the heat.

An example of this would be the dissolution of Ammonium Chloride. The crystalline structure breaks down, and the particles move freely throughout the system, displaying increased entropy. The process happens in ambient temperature. Entropy increases in the molecules, and heat is absorbed from the environment. In terms of the heat, entropy seems to be working in reverse, but in terms of the molecules themselves, entropy increases, making the forward reaction likely.
