Endoscopy Video
I have a ferritin level of 9 and an iron count of 36?
Just had an endoscopy, colonoscopy, and video capsule endscopy. All negative. Had 2 units of blood administered two weeks ago because of anemia. Am taking iron tablets recommended by doctor. What could be a cause of iron not being absorbed?
You have not mentioned your age.
Some diseases or conditions may prevent iron tablet or capsule (ferrous sulphate / ferrous fumarate or gluconate) absorption.
Malabsorption as a Cause of Iron Treatment Failure in infants and children. Patients suffering from malabsorption, mainly Giardia infestation may develop iron deficiency resistent to further iron treatment.
Malabsorption has many causes mentioned earlier. Causes of Malabsorption : celiac disease, sprue.
pancreatic insufficiency causes malabsorption, increased luminal acidity, cirrhosis and cholestasis reduce hepatic bile synthesis or delivery of bile salts to the duodenum, causing malabsorption.

Do they knock you out fully in a upper endoscopy?
Im having one on Wednesday and im worried. I watched a video what they do and the guy was able to talk but he was asleep.

Im afraid ill be too nervous unless they knock me out fully!
As you can see in the description below they will sedate you- I'm sure that if you ask them to fully sedate you they could.
What Can I Expect the Day of my Upper Endoscopy?
- A doctor will explain the upper endoscopy in detail, including possible complications and side effects. The doctor will also answer any questions you may have.
- An experienced doctor will perform the procedure.
- You will be asked to wear a hospital gown and to remove your eyeglasses and dentures.
- A local anesthetic (pain-relieving medication) may be applied at the back of your throat.
- You will be given a pain reliever and a sedative intravenously (in your vein). You will feel relaxed and drowsy.
- A mouthpiece will be placed in your mouth. It does not interfere with your breathing.
- You will lie on your left side during the procedure.
- The doctor will insert the endoscope into your mouth, through your esophagus (the "food pipe" leading from your mouth into your stomach) and into your stomach. The endoscope does not interfere with your breathing.
- Most procedures take 15 to 30 minutes.
