does anyone else have vomiting with hiatal hernia or acid reflux?

my husband has been completely checked out with endoscopy and colonoscopy and all they can find is a hiatal hernia. he says he experiences nausea a lot and sometimes usually in the mornings he will vomit. when he starts vomiting it is so bad he can't even go to work. the Dr's say they think he has acid reflux that isn't controlled. he was taking prevacid and it had been a while since he had thrown up but he was still experiencing the nausea. the dr wanted to change him to nexium 2x a day and he done that for a few days and woke up this morning throwing up. and after i asked him about it, i found out he had been taking the prevacid also (by that i mean a prevacid in the morning and a nexium at night). we have tried to figure out what foods are making it worse but we can't detect a pattern. also he has been drinking an off brand crystal light type product that has citric acid listed as the first ingredient? would that make the acid reflux worse? he drinks A LOT of it.

Definitely! Before I had my hiatal hernia repaired, I vomited constantly throughout the day.

Have his doctors talked to him at all about repairing the hiatal hernia through surgery? He is doing a lot of damage to his esophagus from getting sick to his stomach so frequently. Putting him on heartburn medication isn't going to fix the hernia or magically make it go away. Have you guys looked at a medical diagram on the internet of what a hiatal hernia looks like? Part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm - my guess is with him as sick as he is, it's probably worse than what those diagrams will show you. When I had my surgery to repair my hiatal hernia, -half- of my stomach had pushed up through my diaphragm. It's no wonder why I was getting sick to my stomach so frequently at that point.

Changing your diet from my own experience really doesn't change anything at all. Your stomach is still stuck pushed through your diaphragm, no matter what you eat or don't eat, it doesn't somehow magically make the hernia go away.

The surgery to repair this is relatively simple, and done laparoscopically and has very minimal pain. 5 very tiny incisions the instruments are passed through. I had a Gortex implant sewn into the hole in my diaphragm so my stomach wouldn't pass through again. I haven't had any problems throwing up since having that surgery 5 years ago - additionally I no longer needed heartburn medication either.

Another procedure they can do at the same time (which they did with me, and I needed anyhow) is a nissen fundoplication. Part of the stomach is wrapped around the end of the esophagus and stitched in place. This is actually the surgical fix for acid reflux. No problems since with that either.

If you doctors at this point haven't brought up or discussed surgery, personally I would be questioning if your husband should see other gastroenterologists.

does this sound like sjogrens?

i think i have sjogrens but tested negative for antibodies and positive on a shirmirs test (dry eye test) with a zero. how many have sjogrens and tested negative? my doc said since i tested negative for antibodies we shouldnt do further testing he said my other symptoms dont sound like sjs here they are
stomach pain inflamation on endoscopy
extreme sensitivity to light very painful
shooting pain in arms legs and head
high wbc count 12,000-16,000
high c-reactive protein 9-18.88
low grade fevers
extreme fatigue unable to be productive through the day
mild pain in my wrists and ankles
lots of back and spinal pain
mildly dry mouth mostly in the mornings

does anyone with sjs relate or does it sound like something else? been tested for ms and lots of other things too everything negative

is their any doc in california that specializes in sjogrens

I'm assuming you've been tested for lupus (systemic lupus erythematosus) and thyroid disease, which can both accompany Sjogren's syndrome. And some patients with fibromyalgia report Sjogren's symptoms.

C-reactive protein is typically elevated in lupus, but lupus patients usually have low WBCs rather than high ones. However, if there is an infection along with the lupus, this can elevate the WBCs.

I was evaluated for rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and lupus, and my rheumatologist decided I have fibromyalgia. Often a diagnosis of fibromyalgia is made after everything else turns up negative.

Do not give up. It took over 2 years of testing and different doctors for my diagnosis. There is nothing worse than being in pain and being told, "But there's nothing wrong!" by a physician.
