Is it possible to repair a thinning diaphragm?
my dad, who has always been a really heavy drinker, has been complaining of black/bloody diarrhoea.
in italy on holiday a couple of years ago, he took ill and the italian doctor called me and told me that basically the alcohol was rotting his diaphragm (from what i can remember).
all seems to have been ok since then but within the last week he has been complaining of bloody/black diarrhoea. a google search tells me that bloody diarrhoea is caused by bleeding in the intestine.
i am now thinking that blood is basically seeping through his intestine into his bowel?? i can't find much information online regarding this.
i was wondering, if this is the case, is it possible to repair this if he stops drinking? he is in complete denial that alcohol is causing any problem though.
he has been to the doctors who, without having a sample, has referred him to have an endoscope next week.
any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Diaphragm? That is the muscle under your lungs that is responsible for your breathing, but yes, if he is having bloody/black stool it is most likely in the stomach or digestive tract like the intestine, etc. Cessation of drinking alcohol would be the very first step to halt bleeding and it is possible to repair but not if he doesn't stop drinking. Of course you will still need to see a gastroenterologist to completely confirm the situation and find the specific course of action for your father's recovery. I hope you convince him to see one soon before it's too late.
